When the Role That Scares You Is the One You Need Most
EW
As a coach, few moments bring more joy than receiving a message like this:
“I just got selected for the role! I can’t believe I’m doing this — and I’m excited!”
That message landed in my inbox recently.
Months earlier, this client had been offered an opportunity to step into a role he’d never done before — larger scale, higher rank, and with significantly more responsibilities. It should have been exciting, but he came to our session full of worries.
On paper, he had it all:
✔️ Skills
✔️ Track record
✔️ Credibility
✔️ Attitude
Yet his first instinct was to say no.
Not because he wasn’t capable — but because fear had taken the driver’s seat:
“I’ve never led such a large team before.”
“What if I fail?”
“What if I can’t deliver?”
“How do I deal with that leader who is known to be very difficult?”
We worked together to unpack those fears. As part of the process, we explored his Mental Toughness Profile — a powerful lens that helped us identify how he responded to pressure, uncertainty, and challenge. Through that deep dive, it became clear that beneath the surface was a belief that unfamiliarity meant incompetence. He thought success required feeling ready before saying yes.
But here’s the truth:
The biggest leaps often begin when you don’t feel ready at all.
Why “Scary” Roles Are Often the Best Ones for Your Career
💪 They force skill growth you can’t get in your comfort zone
Stretch roles are like career gyms — they feel heavy at first, but you build strength fast.
👀 They shift how others perceive you
People stop seeing you only for your current role and start seeing your potential.
🧠 They break the perfection-readiness trap
Waiting until you feel 100% ready often means waiting too long. Growth is messy — and that’s where leadership is born.
📖 They give you stories that matter
Years from now, you’ll remember the moments you thought you couldn’t — and then did.
If You’re Offered a Role That Feels Too Big, Ask Yourself:
- Am I saying no because I truly don’t want this — or because I’m afraid?
- Which skills could I gain here that I can’t get anywhere else?
- What’s the worst that could happen — and how would I handle it?
- What support or learning could help me ramp up faster?
When my client said “yes,” he stepped into a chapter of growth he didn’t think he was ready for — and discovered he was more than capable.
So next time opportunity knocks and fear whispers “I’m not ready,” pause before you close the door. That voice of doubt might just be the sign you’re on the brink of something extraordinary.
💬 Your turn: Have you ever taken on a role that scared you — and found it transformed your career?
