Rethinking the “5-Year Plan”: Why Guiding Principles Matter More Than Predictable Paths
“Where do you see yourself in five years?”
It’s one of the most common interview questions—and one of the hardest to answer meaningfully.
In 2008, I couldn’t have predicted I’d be moving to Singapore five years later.
In 2018, I wouldn’t have imagined running my own practice in leadership and coaching.
And, that’s the point.
For many of us, career paths aren’t linear. They’re shaped by shifts in values, opportunities, and the courage to act. So instead of chasing fixed destinations, I’ve always relied on two guiding principles:
1. Know what you don’t want
2. Initiate change
These have helped me pivot intentionally—across roles, industries, and geographies.
💡 Research shows values-aligned careers lead to higher fulfillment, lower burnout, and stronger motivation. In coaching, I often guide client to identify their 2-3 core values. They act like a compass - especially when the road ahead is unclear.
Feeling stuck or uncertain? Try this:
- Write down what you don’t want in your next role or chapter.
- Reflect on what energizes you - even if it’s outside your current job.
- Identify 2–3 principles that have consistently guided your decisions.
You don’t need a perfect 5-year plan. You need clarity on what drives you.
