Cultivating Mental Strength in a Chaotic World - Insights from Chinese Positive Psychology 🔍✨
EW
I recently came across a profound framework shared by Professor Peng Kaiping, Dean of Psychology at Tsinghua University. His approach goes beyond feeling good—it’s about doing good, and through that, achieving well-being.
He calls it the Five Giving Practices:
🗣️ Kind words (言施)
👀 Compassionate eye contact (眼施)
😊 A warm smile (颜施)
🤝 Helpful actions (身施)
💛 Empathy and care from the heart (心施)
To make this globally relatable, I’ve adapted it into the SHINE Method—a simple, memorable guide for cultivating positivity in work and life:
🌟 Smile – Offer warmth without words
🌟 Help – Take initiative to support others
🌟 Interact – Build real human connection
🌟 Nurture – Foster a safe emotional space
🌟 Elevate – Uplift through empathy & kindness
🔹 Why does this matter? Only 23% of employees feel they’re thriving at work (Gallup, 2023). But teams with high emotional well-being see:
📈 21% higher productivity
📉 41% lower absenteeism
Mental well-being isn’t just nice to have—it’s a business imperative.
🔹 In practice:
Try this → At your next team meeting, acknowledge a colleague’s effort. Smile with presence. Ask a genuine question. These micro-moments of positivity build resilience, trust, and engagement.
🌱 Let’s move beyond stress management and toward strength cultivation. When we SHINE, we spark it in others too.
